Topic: “THE LUST OF THE EYES”

Text: Genesis 3:1-6

Memory Verse: “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat” – Genesis 3:6.

Yesterday, we started to examine the lust of the flesh as one of the three dimensions with which the devil tempts believers. We shall continue today by looking at the lust of the eyes which is the second kind of temptation. While the lust of the flesh centers on enticement to please the flesh, the lust of eyes has to do with a temptation to please the eyes. A careful study of the fall of man in the Genesis account reveals that, the devil used all the three levels of temptation to entice Adam and Eve in the garden.

As we again study the account of their fall, we see how the second dimension of temptation played out. The bible says: “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eye…” Genesis 3:6. This is the lust of the eyes. The woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good and pleasing to the eye. The devil presented the fruit of disobedience to them in a very pleasing and attractive way. This is the trick of the devil.

He often presents sin in such a way that it will be pleasing to the eye of unsuspecting and undiscerning Christians. Only eternity can reveal how many believers of our time have been captured through the lust their eyes. Several people today have pierced themselves with many sorrows because of the lust of their eyes. So many great men have fallen in marriage today because they chose according to what was pleasing to the eye.

Friends, beware of what is pleasing to your eyes but is not pleasing to God. Solomon, a man who pursued everything that his eyes desired warns us that: “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death”.Proverbs 16:25.

PRAYER: Lord, deliver me from every lust of the eyes in Jesus’ name. Grant me the grace to go for what is pleasing to you and not what is pleasing to my eyes, Amen.
