DECEMBER 13: “MEMORIAL”

DECEMBER 13, 2024

Topic: “MEMORIAL”

Text: 1 CORINTHIANS 11:24-26

Memory Verse: “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” I Cor. 11:16.

Do this in ‘remembrance of me’. We remember great people, great acts and great moments in history. Memorials help us to remember. They place a marker on the values, people and places we hold in high esteem. The monuments in our capitals of the ‘Unknown Soldier’ serve as a place of mourning and honour for those soldiers who died in combat for their country. Jacob in Genesis 28:18, raised an altar in a place he named Bethel, because God was there and he did not know, until he dreamt of angels.

As human beings, we erect buildings, start trust funds and foundations to memorialize our departed loved ones. God has a memorial as well, our Lord’s Supper. It reminds us of God’s love for us and His eternal promise to us. This memorial is enacted with bread and wine. The bread to represent the broken body, offered up on the cross at Calvary. The wine is the representation of the Blood shed on that same cross. Both together signify the everlasting covenant between God, our Father and we His own people. This memorial, reverently undertaken, should always remind us of how much we are loved by God. Truly, a love beyond words.

Today, who do you and I remember with love? May we always make room in our lives for the people and moments that formed us and mean so much to us.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me to reach out when I can and where I can to those who have helped form me into who I am today in Christ. Glory be to your Holy name, in Jesus’ name.
