JULY 02 “FEATURES/CHARACTERISTICS OF GODLY INTIMACY: SHARING WITHOUT COMPULSION”

The early church did not have to be told to give – they gave freely and sacrificially. True intimacy in the church means we see others’ burdens as ours and respond from the heart. Giving should not be seen as a burden or tax, but rather, as love in action.

A fellowship once raised funds quietly to assist a member who was a widow and had some health challenges. The funds enabled her settle much of her hospital bills.  The kind gesture was done without her asking for assistance.  That is a demonstration of godly intimacy – responding to needs out of compassion, not compulsion.

When we allow the Holy Spirit to move in our hearts, generosity flows freely and cheerfully and this strengthens our bonds.
It is not always easy to show this kind of love. However, it is expected of us if we truly want to relate to one another in a Christ-like manner.  If we want the character of Christ to be seen in us, then this kind of gesture should be our default mode and not the exception. It is by this attitude that we can demonstrate that we are one body in Christ.

Practice It: Identify someone with a need this week and respond anonymously, without waiting to be asked. You could provide that need through your small group leader or through a benevolent ministry of the church.

PRAYER:  Lord, teach me to give freely and joyfully, not out of obligation, but out of love for You and others. Help me to see the needs of others as opportunities to reflect your love and generosity in the name of Jesus, Amen.
