TOPIC: “HAVING A MIND TO WORK FOR GOD: THE JESUS WAY”
TEXT: Nehemiah 4:4-6
MEMORY VERSE: “Nehemiah 4:6, “So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.”
Dealing with enemies of God’s people often put believers in a dilemma. They are so provocative that one is tempted to hate them. However, Jesus says that we should love our enemies. They aggravate us so much that our natural instinct is to rain curses on them, but Jesus says, “Bless them that curse you and pray for them which despitefully use you.” “Therefore, if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirsts, give him drink: for in so doing, thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” “Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.”
However, we can prophesy the end of the wicked as David often did and as Nehemiah did in our passage for today. It is more of a prophecy than mere curses.
The attacks and provocations of the enemy not withstanding, the work of God must be done. Luke 9:62 says, “And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
When ‘the people have a mind to work,’ God will give them the resources and the grace to get it done. As Psalm 110:3 puts it, God’s ‘people shall be willing in the day of His power…’ The walls will be built and the Kingdom of God will be built till the knowledge of His glory covers the earth as the waters cover the sea.
PRAYER: Dear God, use us to demonstrate your power, your love and your glory, till all see that you are the only way, only truth and only life. Give us a mind to work for you according to your will, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
