Topic:  “The Power of Christ’s death over Anxiety ”

Text: Philippians 4:4-8

Memory Verse: Philippians 4:6 – “Be careful for nothing: but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your request be known unto God”.

The NIV Study Bible says of that verse for today, “Do not be anxious about anything”. Part of Jesus’ sermon on the mount in Matthew 6:25 says “Therefore I say unto you, take no thought for your life what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink nor yet for your body what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat and the body than raiment?” The interesting thing about life is that those who seemingly have everything in life still get anxious about one thing or the other. Troubled, anxious thoughts destroy the brightness of life and weaken our powers. Each day brings duties to perform, difficulties to meet and trials to endure. No one is strong enough to face today’s problems and on top of these, have anxious thought about what may come tomorrow.

Anxiety is a form of fear. It involves unbelief and unreasoning dread. God gives us strength for He sees beyond what we see and what we shall undergo today. Enough for each day are the burdens of that day. We are not to be anxious about tomorrow. It is in God’s hand. We make ourselves miserable when we anticipate trouble or become anxious about possible future misfortune.

My late father once told me that when he started working, the first thing he bought was a Raleigh bicycle that had a small bag behind it. On the bag he said he wrote ‘why worry when you can pray. We must learn to trust and pray to God to avoid anxieties. Anxiety and trust are never found together. When we are anxious we are not trusting, when we are trusting we are not anxious. The death of Jesus has redeemed us from the spirit of anxiety because through it, we can come to the father and ask whatever we want in prayer.

PRAYER: Father, please deliver me from the spirit of anxiety and give me grace to trust you more and more, Amen.
