Topic:  “The Power of Christ’s death in our prayer ”

Text: Matthew 6:9-15

Memory Verse:  Matthew 6:9 – “After this manner therefore pray ye: our father which art in heaven hallowed be thy name”.

To live without prayer is ultimately to disbelieve God and to lose the most important of human values, such as faith, hope and love. Prayer is a way of faith. Jesus taught us how to pray in Matthew 6, our passage for today. A very notable part of the prayer is how it starts. Our father who art in heaven. This connotes intimacy with the father. Intimacy is the expression of true prayer. It is based upon God’s initiative in calling us from our brokenness and our inability to help ourselves to be with Him and seek help from Him. Then we can dare to call Him Abba father.

There is nothing we can compare with the issue of intimacy with God. The good news of Jesus Christ and his death and resurrection is that we are enabled to turn from the despair of our wretched and wicked world to discover God as our father. Prayer brings us to the presence of God. I love that song by William Walford ‘Sweet Hour of Prayer’. It says; ”Sweet hour of Prayer sweet hour of Prayer, that calls me from a world of care, and bids me at my father’s throne, make all my wants and wishes known. In seasons of distress and grief, my soul has often found relief, and oft escaped the tempter’s snare by thy return sweet hour of prayer”.

It is the power that emanates from the cross of Calvary at the death of Jesus Christ that has given us the spirit of sonship with the father. It has made it possible for us to have intimacy with Him and therefore to have boldness to call Him Abba Father and seek His help in times of trouble and want.

As of today, can you boldly refer to God as your Father?

PRAYER: Abba Father, I look up to you today. By the power in the death of your dear son, have mercy on me and take me as your true son/daughter, Amen.
