Topic: “BENEFITS OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION POWER – THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT”
Text: John 16:5-15
Memory Verse: “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” – John 16:7 (NIV)
When Jesus began to speak to His disciples about the end of His earthly ministry, and the fact that he was going to the Father, they were filled with grief. They could not imagine how they were going to live their lives without their Master, with whom they had spent an enormous amount of time together. At this point, they seemed to have come to a dead end with the One who had meant everything to them.
Jesus saw their plight and had to reassure them of His continuing presence with and in them by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit was however not going to come, unless Jesus had died and resurrected. By implication, the promise of sending the Holy Spirit was only going to find fulfilment in the resurrected Christ. If Jesus had not resurrected, the fulfilment of this very important promise would not have been kept, but thanks be to God, Jesus did.
Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.” (John 7:38-39)
Additionally, the coming of the Holy Spirit was to fulfill a divine mandate of companionship, guidance, and bringing glory to Jesus.
By the power of Christ’s resurrection, every believer in Christ now enjoys the privilege of God’s presence in his life in the person of the Holy Spirit. It is the power of His Spirit in us that makes us both willing and able to do the pleasure of His Will (Phil 2:13)
PRAYER: Lord, fill me with your Spirit that I will be so led by Him like never before as I desire to walk with you intimately, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
