Topic: “The power of Christ’s death over sin”
Text: Romans 1:11-18
Memory Verse: Roman 6:14 – “For sin shall not have dominion over you for ye are not under the law but under grace”.
Sin is a great enemy in our lives. Despite the fact that we have accepted Christ in our lives, we still commit sins. That was why Paul said that he sometimes found himself doing things that he did not want to do. Whether small or big, sin is sin.
We often use the mobile phone to tell lies. Someone calls you and you tell the person that you are in Ikeja whereas you are in Lagos Island. A lot of us consider this not to be a significant sin and after telling this type of lie, you now say God please forgive me. Someone may argue that it is not possible to conquer and subdue sin, that it is unavoidably too hard for us.
However, in our passage of today, we see that it is possible to subdue sin. Christ went to the cross, and shed His blood on the cross of Calvary to free us from the bondage of sin. Yet we are always battling with this enemy called sin but we must battle it in faith in the grace that emanates from the power of Christ’s death. We are in the dispensation of grace and no longer under the law so sin can be dealt with and subdued. We must however stand our ground and take up our arms against it. Sin is an enemy that is already foiled and baffled and there is strength laid up in the covenant of grace for our assistance. God’s promises are powerful and effective for the mortifying of sinful lives.
Sin may struggle in a believer and may give him a great deal of trouble, but it will not have dominion over him. It may vex him, but it shall not rule over him. Are you struggling with a particular type of sin in your life? Our flesh enjoys sin, so to subdue sin, we must learn to put our flesh under subjection through the provision of Christ’s death in our lives.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus I am weak but thou art strong. Help me with your power to put my flesh under subjection always so that I will be able to subdue sin in my life, Amen.
