Topic: “Praise in Difficult Times”
Text: Acts 16:16-26
Memory Verse: “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” – Acts 16:25
Praising God when you have just received a palatable news comes easily. For example, if you receive a call that you have been awarded that contract you have chased for a long time, or you gained admission into the school of your choice and the course of your choice, or you got that promotion you have waited for over five years. In any of the above cases or more, praising God becomes spontaneous for anyone to do.
However, praising God does not come easily when things are moving in the opposition direction – the rent has expired and there is yet no money to pay, the children’s school fees is due for payment but there is no hope of getting the money. How can you tell me to praise the Lord when I am being punished, not because I sinned, but because I did the right thing? Praising God at this time really makes no sense humanly speaking.
Paul and Silas, despite being in prison and facing unjust punishment, chose to praise God. They did not let their circumstances determine their worship. Instead, they focused on the greatness of God, even in their suffering. This act of praise in the midst of difficulty had a profound impact – not only did it release them from their chains, but it also showed others the power of God’s presence in times of trial.
Praising God during difficult times is an act of faith. It shifts our focus from our problems to His power and goodness. When we choose to praise, we invite God’s presence into our struggles, allowing Him to work in and through us. Praise in the storm strengthens our intimacy with God because it demonstrates trust and dependence on Him.
In the midst of your own trials, how can praising God deepen your intimacy with Him? Praise helps us remember that God is sovereign over our circumstances, and that His love for us never changes, even when life is hard. The more you focus on your God, the smaller that challenge becomes because in no time, the Lord will glorify Himself.
Today, if you are facing a challenge, make a conscious choice to praise God. Sing a song, offer a prayer of thanksgiving, or declare His goodness. Let your praise be a declaration of trust in His power and faithfulness.
PRAYER: Father, I choose to praise You, even in the midst of my struggles. I trust that You are with me, and I know that You are greater than any challenge I face. Help me to deepen my intimacy with You through my praise. Amen.
