TOPIC: “LED BY THE SPIRIT”
TEXT: Luke 4:1-2
MEMORY VERSE: “And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness” – Luke 4:1 (ESV).
The Lord had been ordering the steps of Jesus because He no longer had a will of His own – His will was lost in His father’s will. He was led by the Spirit because He was walking in alignment with God. He was led to the Jordan to be baptized where He received public confirmation of who He was and is and as well as His assignment. Who would have thought that after such a powerful encounter and public confirmation of His ministry, He would be led by the Holy Spirit to be tempted? It takes complete surrender to God’s will to allow God to lead one this way. Jesus our perfect example showed us that hundred percent alignment is required to walk with God in complete surrender to His will.
As Christians, what will facilitate and enhance our walk with the Lord is for us to be full of the Holy Spirit. As stated in our text for today, Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit. A man who operates in the realm of the flesh or one who is carnally minded cannot be full of the Holy Spirit hence, will not be led by the spirit to walk in alignment with God. Jesus knew His mission in the wilderness was to fast and be tempted. One would have thought that a man who stayed in the wilderness for forty days would not be distracted, rather would focus solely on the things of the Spirit. However, we notice that, this was not so.
Satan was fully prepared for Jesus, to take Him off guard so that He could relinquish His power of sonship to him (satan). His attack was on the sonship of Jesus because he knew that was where His power lay according to John 1:12 which talks about the authority we have as believers because of our sonship through Christ. Satan wanted to cleverly collect this authority from Jesus, but Jesus full of the Holy Spirit walked in alignment with God, resisted him and defeated him with God’s word. As Christians, we must be full of the Holy Spirit so that we do not give room for the activities of flesh that will lead us into error.
PRAYER: Holy Spirit, more than ever before, fill my life with your power to enable me to conquer the lust of the flesh in Jesus’ name, Amen.
